Pretty in Purple – A Floral Happy Birthday Card

Hey Krafty friends! Today I’m sharing a super pretty birthday card I made using a flower die set I hadn’t used yet—and of course, a bunch of goodies from my stash!
I’m always needing birthday cards (honestly, who isn’t?), and even my husband occasionally asks, “Do you have a birthday card I can use?” So I figured it was time to whip up something fresh and floral—and I love how this one turned out!
Let’s Start with the Base
First up, I cut my card base using CutCardStock Cougar White 80 lb Cover Cardstock and gave it a nice, clean fold using my scoring board. To add some texture, I ran the front of the card through my Spellbinders Platinum 6 embossing machine, with an oldie-but-goodie Cuttlebug Mosaic embossing folder. Then, using my Scrapbook.com Metallic Gold ink pad, I lightly swiped over the raised embossed areas to highlight the design and give it a touch of gold—so simple, but so pretty!
Flower Power 🌸
Next, I pulled out Altenew’s Pink Star Tulip Die Set. I die-cut the flower from CutCardStock’s 80 lb Discount Cardstock in Hydrangea Purple, and the leaves from Pop Tone 65 lb Cardstock in Gumdrop Green.
To bring the flower to life, I did a little ink blending:
For the flower, I used Catherine Pooler’s Grape Crush ink.
For the leaves, I used Nuvo’s Shamrock Green.
I blended most of the ink toward the center of the petals and leaves, fading it out to the edges for a soft, dimensional look. I left the tiny outer petal pieces un-inked so they’d pop a little more.
Adding Texture
To go behind the flower, I used Altenew’s Burlap Texture Die and cut it from Stardream Metallic Gold Cardstock from CutCardStock. This little detail added a lovely rustic glam vibe to the card that I really love.
The Sentiment
I stamped “Happy Birthday” from Altenew’s Beautiful Inside stamp set onto Stardream Metallic Onyx cardstock using Versamark Watermark ink. Before stamping, I used my anti-static powder bag to keep stray embossing powder from sticking where I didn’t want it (a total must-do!).
Then I used Brutus Monroe’s Alabaster White embossing powder and heat set it. Next I trimmed the sentiment into a rectangle with a hand-cut banner tail on one end.
Just One More Detail…
To tie in the black from the sentiment strip, I splattered a little Tim Holtz Distress Spray Stain in Black Soot over the embossed card base. It added just the right touch of contrast and interest.
Assembly Time!
I glued my layered flower together with Nuvo glue. Then added the leaves where I liked them, and adhered the whole floral piece on top of the gold burlap die cut. Then I placed everything onto my card base and finished it off by attaching the sentiment strip across the flower.
And that’s it! A pretty, purple, green and gold, floral birthday card ready to brighten someone’s special day.
I hope this gives you some inspiration to dig through your stash and use a floral die you’ve been saving! Let me know if you try something similar. I’d love to see it. And hey, what kind of cards do you find yourself making the most? Thanks for reading, and happy crafting!
