DIY Happy Fall Banner – Handmade Autumn & Thanksgiving Decor

Hi crafty friends! Fall is on it’s way…and today I’m sharing how to make a DIY Happy Fall Banner that’s perfect for autumn decorating. Whether you’re looking for a festive project for your home, a handmade Thanksgiving banner, or a fun way to use your cutting machine this season, this banner is a beautiful option.

This project uses a custom fall SVG file that I designed. You can find the file in my Etsy shop or the Silhouette Design Store. With your Cricut, Silhouette, Siser or other electronic cutting machine, you can cut out all the pieces and easily assemble them into a festive fall decoration. The finished banner looks gorgeous hung across a mantle, doorway, or even as a photo backdrop for Thanksgiving dinner.

Supplies for DIY Happy Fall Banner

All the cardstock I used comes from CutCardStock.com in rich, autumn-inspired shades:

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Cut Out Banner Pieces

Upload the Happy Fall banner SVG file to your cutting machine software and cut all the shapes.

Pro Tip: Group the pieces (leaves, acorns, pumpkins, letters) to make assembly quick and organized.

Step 2: Assemble the Leaves

  • Attach the brown leaf outline to the green leaf base with thin foam tape strips for dimension.

  • Repeat for the second leaf.

Step 3: Build the Acorns

  • Glue the top outline to the light brown acorn piece.

  • Layer it onto the dark brown acorn base with thin foam tape strips.

  • Add the small highlight detail with a thin foam tape strip on top for extra depth.

Step 4: Create the Pumpkins

  • Glue the Tangy Orange pumpkin outline to the light orange base. You could attach this piece with thin foam tape strips for extra dimension if you like

  • Add the green leaf accents with liquid glue

  • Attach the stems with foam squares for a dimensional effect.

Step 5: Add the Letters

  • Cut from Black Licorice cardstock.

  • Use foam squares to center each letter on the pumpkins, spelling “ HAPPY FALL.”

Step 6: String the Banner

  • Thread twine through the pieces in this order: a leaf – word “LLAF,” – then a leaf.

  • For the word “HAPPY,” thread an acorn, letters “YPPAH”, then the last acorn.

Pro Tip: By starting the threading from the last letter and working backwards it keeps you from having to guess how much twine you’ll need to complete the length of the banner as you can keep the roll of the twine at the end you started from and cut it once complete with the banner. Keeping the twine on the roll prevents waste and makes spacing easier.

Why You’ll Love This DIY Fall Banner

  • Reusable: Sturdy cardstock makes this banner durable enough to enjoy year after year.

  • Customizable: Change colors or swap letters to personalize your banner.

  • Perfect for Thanksgiving: A handmade banner adds a personal touch to your holiday gatherings.

  • Easy to Make: With the SVG file, your cutting machine does a lot of the work!

Final Thoughts

I absolutely loved designing and creating this Happy Fall banner DIY project. The mix of acorns, pumpkins, and leaves creates the perfect handmade Thanksgiving decoration for your home. Using foam tape and layered cardstock gives it so much dimension, and the finished piece is a true standout for fall decorating.
